Social Standards

Today in a nutshell: people with cell phones in their back pockets discussing how other people today are so mesmerized by social media and technology that they are missing out on real world substance. While I fully understand both sides of this never ending debate we can’t seem to escape, I’d like to shed some light on both sides.

I read once (not sure where to give credit so we’ll just say ‘anonymous’) that yes social media is all anyone can do right now. But how about before that? TV. And before that? Books. It doesn’t matter what it is, people will have their noses buried in it. The big testament I’ve noticed, it’s more popular to bash what is current rather than to embrace it. Now, I’m not saying you should, whatever that may be. All I’m saying is I think both sides of this argument aren’t understanding the other.

To the “get off your phone enthusiasts”:

I stand by your vow to embrace the outside world and all that it has to offer and I fully understand the judgement that comes along with seeing someone that is on their phone so much that it becomes distracting. However, don’t forget all the positives technology brings into the world. We have everything imaginable at our fingertips and whether you choose to indulge in your phone or not, don’t bash others who choose to. Technology advancements are inevitable and will continue to happen throughout the course of time. So, I guess I’m saying to look a little deeper. Don’t glide through the surface of judgement based on someone’s personal need for their phone. I feel as though my own personal relationship with social media has become more about capturing. I don’t think I ever would have become fond of taking pictures or been brave enough to display my writing for the world (AKA my loyal followers) to see. It’s brought me happiness to have this creative outlet and for that I thank you, social media.

To the “constant re-loaders”:

While social media has become a wonderful outlet for my creativity, it is sparse in comparison to all of the others. Without concerts, beautiful hiking trails, sandy beaches, perfect sunsets, practicing yoga, discovering new places and meeting new people- I would be nothing. This is the argument the other guys ↑ are suggesting: that throughout these endeavors you need to put the phone down and enjoy it. I fully believe that those who argue such a point are just persistent on not missing any moments. While those people want to live in them, others would rather capture them on their phones. There’s nothing wrong with either, obviously dependent on circumstance, but you have to remember it takes all kinds.

With that, I leave you with the notion that while you may jump on one side of this fence, I’d like to think I stand clear in the middle while seeing both sides. No side is wrong or right, just different. Today’s world is composed of several different aspects than the past and while some people refuse to accept it, others embrace it. So shove your judgement aside and live your life exactly how you please.

But can you take my picture first??
